Kruger Park – 5 Days

5 DAY BUSHVELD SAFARI JOHANNESBURG TO JOHANNESBURG
3 Nights Established Camps, 1 Night Lodge

A long ripple in the earth’s crust, the Escarpment is a conspicuous landmark along the eastern edge of South Africa, separating the temperate grasslands of the Highveld from the sun-baked savannas of the Lowveld.

The Escarpment’s elevated, grassy summit is often mist shrouded; streams tumble down rocky stairways that give way to waterfalls, and dense forests spread across the valleys like shadows. From the cool summit, the view to the east is across a seemingly endless landscape of mauve-grey bush, punctuated occasionally by low hills and rocky outcrops.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Seasonal Malaria precautions may be advisable and are locally obtainable. A sleeping bag, towel and pillow are required for this tour. Game viewing on foot is difficult, so we also place importance on some of the smaller aspects of the bush. It can get very hot so suitable precautions against sunburn should be taken. Our price includes all transport, food, coffee, tea, fruit juice at breakfast, accommodation, walks, game drives, entry fees and permits, group equipment and a professional guide. The price does not include alcohol and soft drinks, curios, tips and meals whilst in transit to and from Johannesburg. Before departure clients will be required to enter into an agreement agreeing to our booking conditions and general information. Clients are required to have their own comprehensive personal travel insurance.

On arrival at ‘white sands’ you will be welcomed by your guide for the remainder of your safari and proceed to do a game drive to our ‘wilderness’ camp site. their way down to the river. We return to camp shortly after sunset for dinner and evening drinks around the camp fire.

This is the best time of day for searching for the big cats as they are still active and chances of seeing them are good. Around mid morning we return to camp for a delicious ‘bush brunch’, followed by a siesta to escape the heat of the day. As it starts to cool off, we head out for another afternoon game drive in search of further wildlife activity. Chobe National Park has a wide variety of game from cats to large herbivores with elephant and buffalo being a highlight. However there are also the rarer game like puku and roan antelope, along with many more common antelope on offer too. Day 3: (Mon) Chobe National Park (B)
Another ‘dumela’ dawn wake up and after a scrumptious cooked breakfast we ensure all your luggage is securely packed before heading out of the Park on our final game drive. This last drive may even prove to be the best and will with the others remain etched in memory as a truly great African experience. Return to Kazungula by 09h00 where the tour ends.

Day 1: (Sun) Isandlwana & Fugitive’s Drift (LD)
Make an early start from Durban and head inland towards South Africa’s famous battlegrounds, where more
battles were fought in this remote area of KwaZulu-Natal than anywhere else in South Africa. Your expert Battlefield guide will recount the Anglo Zulu War Battle of Isandlwana, where 20 000 Zulu warriors took on the firepower of the British troops, and wiped out almost an entire regiment in about 2½ hours. Then on to Fugitive’s Drift, where many of the 402 soldiers who fled from the Battle managed to escape from Zululand into Colonial Natal. Several of the fugitives were killed after they had crossed the Mzinyathi (Buffalo) River and the graves of Lieutenants Nevill Coghill, Teignmouth Melvill and others lie on the hillside overlooking the River. Visit Rorke’s Drift, where a handful of British soldiers, outnumbered 35 to 1, fought off 4 000 Zulus for 12 hours, in a battle which saw 11 Victoria Crosses awarded, the highest number awarded to a Regiment (the 24th Regiment of Foot) in a single action. We continue, thoughts lingering about young lives lost and medals won, to our guest house for warm, country hospitality and a delicious dinner before retiring for the night.
Accommodation: Guest House or similar

Day 2: (Mon) Spioenkop (BL)
After a hearty traditional South African breakfast we make our way to the summit of Spioenkop Mountain. From
here your guide will recreate the tragic battle between Boer and Brit which unfolded over 9 days in January 1900. The British occupying Spioenkop’s summit were in full view of Boer rifle and artillery fire, in this, the third and bloodiest attempt by the British to relieve Ladysmith. Incredibly, General Louis Botha (who became the first Prime Minister of the Union of South Africa), Winston Churchill, by then a Lieutenant serving in the South African Light Horse, and Mohandas Gandhi, then a stretcherbearer and later the Mahatma, witnessed the battle. We then continue a little further to visit the site of the armoured train incident, made famous due to the fact that Churchill (at that stage a correspondent with the Morning Post) was among those captured. After lunch, we take our leave of bloody battlefields and head for Durban, arriving in the late afternoon.

Safari through the wilderness areas of Botswana on open 4WD vehicles and watch elephants from a boat as they drink from the Chobe River. Culminating in the wonderful views of Victoria Falls!

Day 1 MAUN [camping - - -]

Sunway Safaris adventure begins at 14:00pm in Maun. Maun is a small town on the South Eastern edge of the Okavango Delta and Sunway Safaris access point to the wilderness of Botswana. The first day of your tour will be spent settling into your camp and preparing for the trip.

For the more adventurous of heart there is a scenic flight over the Okavango Delta, which is a great opportunity for game spotting (own expense). As the african sun starts setting over the horizon, sit and relax with a sundowner drink at the pool, and a meal in the lodge restaurant, (own expense) celebrating the start of the journey.

Day 2 – 3 MOREMI [camping BLD]

As day breaks, we head north out of Maun, to the Moremi Game Reserve, in our open 4WD vehicle. This unique area of Moremi Game Reserve is named after the Chief of the Batawana tribe, who founded the reserve in 1963, making it one of the first reserves in Africa proclaimed by the local community.

The Moremi Game Reserve protects a large part of the greater Okavango Delta. The grasslands, floodplains, forests and winding water channels combine to form a variety of game viewing habitats attracting amongst others; elephant, lion, hippo, leopard and wild dog. We explore the reserve on morning and afternoon game drives, relax during the heat of the day and spend two nights wild camping in the reserve.

Day 4 – 5 SAVUTI [camping BLD]

The dry Savuti channel runs from the west into the sandy Mababe depression, but it seldom flows, so the seasonal rains and waterholes in the park ensure a perennial source of life for the game in the area. From our spot we have this amaizing oppotunity to watch as wildlife gathers on the open plains of the Savuti marsh. The surrounding dry camel thorn trees make this place a wildlife photographer’s dream. Famous for its big game and particularly its predators – the lions and the hyenas of Savuti fight a constant battle for survival. Here we set camp for 2 nights, near a waterhole which is a constant source of activity.

Day 6 – 7 CHOBE NATIONAL PARK [camping Bx2 Lx2 Dx1]

The Chobe National Park offers an Incredible wildlife experience. The meandering river feeds the flood plains, which provides essential grazing to the herbivores throughout the year. And although it boasts some of the largest concentration of plains game, Chobe is most famous for massive herds of elephants.

We are more than likely to spot them during the dry season, in the late afternoon, when the herds of elephants emerge from the Mopane woodland to quench their thirst. One of the best ways to view the elephants and to get closer to the hippos and crocodiles is an afternoon cruise on the river.- an experience of a lifetime. We spend one night camping in the Chobe National Park and one night on the border of the park, in Kasane. We treat ourselves to a meal in the local restaurant.

Day 8 – 9 VICTORIA FALLS / LIVINGSTONE [camping B - -]

For our last 2 nights, we Cross the Zambezi River on the Kazungula ferry to enter Zambia and make our way to Livingstone. The Zambezi river plummets 110 meters over the Victoria Falls and it is a breathtaking sight. We spend half a day touring the falls before setting up camp.

The next day is at your leisure. Enjoy some of the wonderful activities available in the adventure capital of Southern Africa. We highly recommend the Flight of Angels over the falls in a micro light, Absolutely exhilarating. Of you may choose to have day of rafting on the white waters of the mighty Zambezi River. If that does not interest you, you could chance an elephant back safari which is an experience never to be forgotten. Our evening meals are in colourful local restaurants.

Day 10 LIVINGSTONE – TOUR ENDS [- B - -]

Tour ends at 08:00 after breakfast. Transfers to local airports are available.

This safari has a 14h00 departure which means you can fly into Maun and join the tour on the day of your flight arrival. Please indicate if you require assistance with airport transfers and hotel reservations in the vacation planner when prompted.
